West Fork Hike

Jeff and I were so excited to get the much anticipated baby backpack carrier from Greg and Renita and we tried it out the very first chance we got. Saturday morning, we drove about 30 minutes south to hike a trail called West Fork, which had been recommended to Jeff at work. The hike was absolutely gorgeous! It followed a little river, which we crossed several times and there were beautiful trees covered in fall leaves everywhere! We hiked about 7 miles total (3.5 in and back out the way we came), but we've been told it's possible to do about 17 miles on this trail.

It was a very popular hike so we were rarely out of eye-shot or earshot of other couples and groups. Although, we ran into plenty of very pleasant, friendly people and got countless comments on Luke's cuteness (he was particularly irresistible in his little bear ears), I wish we had gotten a little more time alone in quiet nature. I think it could have been a very peaceful and spiritual experience out there surrounded by all that beauty. But even as it was, it was an extremely enjoyable hike. We loved every minute of it!

Luke did well in the backpack for the most part. He was pretty content looking around just trying to take everything in. Lots of people made comments about how it was "the way to travel" and one woman called it a little Taj Mahal on Jeff's back, while another guy referred to it as a "Prince of Persia throne."

Stopping to feed the hungry little bear. We have recently upgraded from 5 oz. to 10 oz. bottles and Luke still sucks them down like they're nothing!

This was a much more beautiful sight than the picture depicts.

So gorgeous!

After an hour or so in the pack, Luke got a little sick of it. I think it's because he was tired and he couldn't comfortably lie his head down. So Mommy carried him for a while.

With Mom carrying him, Luke was comfortable enough to fall asleep.

When we got to our halfway point and were going to turn around, we tried to make it possible for Luke to sleep in the pack. This arrangement wasn't as successful as we'd hoped.

Apparently, a little blanket under his chin and the canopy out of the way was all Luke needed.

After a long morning of hiking, Luke was exhausted. So were Jeff and I, but that didn't stop us from taking an 11 mile bike ride downtown and back to get TCBY. It was a good (and tiring) day.

In other news, Jeff and I were called to be the Ward Youth Conference Chairpersons this past week. We are pretty much in charge of planning and coordinating Youth Conference, which will be happening about a month from now, for the 14-18 year-olds in our ward. We're excited, albeit a tad overwhelmed.
