Children's Museum - Dr. Seuss Style

Ben and Caitlin got a family annual membership to the Houston Children's Museum for Bethany's birthday and because the membership doesn't specify specific adults and children, during the week when Ben can't go, Luke and I get to get in on the fun too! Yay! One day back in early March, the five of us had a seriously fabulous day playing and exploring at the museum!

Some kind of wiffle ball launcher that Luke and Bethany couldn't get enough of.

Of course, this kid would hunt down the one full-sized car in the building first! Apparently, it was field trip day, so the front seat of the car had a constant flow of loud and boisterous children clamoring through it, but Luke was determined to get a turn in the driver's seat.

Making his move.

When that didn't work, he tried to barter with a ping pong ball. Another unsuccessful attempt.

At last, victory!

These foam block shapes are filled with different size weights and have different properties that can be tested at this station as they are retrieved from the conveyer belt. Pretty cool.

Becca stole a chicken from the farm area and started carrying it around like she owned it.

Luke didn't exactly balance on this beam. He more walked awkwardly with one foot on the beam and one on the floor.

The kids could see themselves on the TV screen.

Luke thought if he likes to eat eggs, the chicken probably would too.

Mmm... (really weird thick) bacon...

How cute is this fishing boat, complete with nets and a big bucket to put the rubber fish in after they are "caught!"

Since it was Dr. Seuss week, there was a station to draw on Cat in the Hat faces.

Luke was more interested in excitedly pointing out the many many buses lining the street outside. "Buh! Buh!"

Luke was immediately on board with the idea of drawing on his face!

Craft table.

Tracing his hand. He insisted on doing Mommy's hand too.

This train is right by the entrance of the museum. It doesn't seem that fun to me, since most of the knobs and wheels don't even turn, but Luke always runs to drive it!

Just a little grocery shopping in the pretend city, "Kidtropolis."

Bethany collected items on a shopping list she got when we came into the store. She looks like a rushed mom trying to get home in time to make dinner with her family!

Luke was particularly interested in the fruit. He wanted to eat all of it! Especially the strawberries. And he even tasted a couple just to make sure they weren't real.

When I told Luke I couldn't open this plastic banana for him to eat, he decided to give Caitlin a shot.

Luke wanted to eat all of this bread so bad! No matter how many times I told  him it wasn't real, the soft, realistic texture caused him to believe otherwise and I think he bit a least half the loaves in there!

Luke decided it was his job to sort the fruit.

Bethany was so sweet the way she took care of and held this stuffed animal like it was a real bunny.

Getting the hamster out of his cage.

This ridiculously fat cat was so funny! Luke weighed him to see just how fat he really was!

Baby chicks! I just wanted to hold them! I think the kids did too!

Luke kept saying, "Hi. Hi!" whenever a chick got close to him.

The huge water area outside was definitely a favorite!

Waiting for his boat to float downstream.

Luke had a hard time making this wave machine work on his own, so he waited a couple of feet away from the handle, and then, when a bigger kid would come over to use it, he would run up and grab the bottom, pretending that he was the one moving it, without even really acknowledging the kid! It was hilarious! He did it two or three times!

Laughing as he got sprayed.

Luke and this little girl were determined to reach the balls and toys!

While Luke climbed up repeatedly to grab what he wanted out of the water, Becca decided she shouldn't have to do that and expectantly motioned for an adult to retrieve them for her.

Luke onto his next ball. Becca: "Hey who's going to get me that ball??"

Oh hey there, Mom. What would you do if I just jumped in here?

I'm not sure this giant wheel had a purpose, but Luke spun it like it did!

Foot pedals made these water guns shoot jets of water. This was very popular with the field trip kids, but Luke got a quick turn.

We finished our visit with several trips down the slide on the little playground near the water area.

Bethany always looked like she was expecting to be met with something very painful at the bottom of the slide!

Okay this time, she did actually hit her head a little.

And off we went to have lunch in the car and head home for naps - preggo Caitlin needed one of those too!

Not entirely sure what was going on here.

Caitlin's big roomy van is equipped with two TV's that attach to the seat backs, so the kids got to watch Winnie the Pooh the whole ride there and back! They were pretty happy campers!
